If you use too much pressure you will spread the mud deeper into your carpet. If you are dealing with loose dirt, use a broom and a dust pan to sweep as much of the dirt away as you can. Again, be gentle, the more aggressive you are, the more likely the dirt is to spread throughout your carpet.
