The Indy Urban Flea – Something for Everyone
Have you ever heard of the Indy Urban Flea? No, it’s not a contagious disease, a pest outbreak, or a popular jazz bar. It’s a monthly flea market held in the downtown Indianapolis area, and it truly has something for everyone.
Something Old. Beautiful artwork, delicate dishes, and well-made furniture never go out of style. In fact, some people think that they get more valuable as they age. Antiques appeal to our sense of connection with our past and our desire to incorporate that past into our future. The day I visited the Urban Flea there was an eclectic sampling of treasures from the past. From inexpensive matted prints to depression glass and other old-fashioned pieces. From vintage clothing to small but sturdy wooden furnishings. These booths beckoned the passerby to remember a time when life was simpler and absorb a bit of the past into our busy modern lives.
Something New. Old has its charm, but everyone is always looking for something new, right? Well, the Urban Flea had that to offer as well. Ladies seemed to be drawn to the wide selection of hand-crafted jewelry with a little something to appeal to any taste or price range. There was also a booth featuring a new (or at least I had never heard of it) nail care product called jamberry. These decorative adhesives can be applied to nails with what seemed like little fuss. Look no further in your search to find that distinctive element to add a little flair to your look.
Something Borrowed. Well, not technically borrowed, more like repurposed. One booth displayed a variety of hand-crafted pieces made from reclaimed wood. It really was amazing to see the rustic, yet upscale appearance of these well-made items. From a portable wooden bar that would bring style to any kitchen to unique and functional dog crates, which would catch your attention even if you don’t have a dog, there was definitely a selection for those seeking a one-of-a-kind piece.
Something Blue. Blue as in blue jeans. One vendor carried a selection of unique purses made from a variety of materials, including blue jeans. These were not only stylish but also well-crafted with attention to detail in both design and construction. With a wide variety of sizes, shapes, and styles, it might be hard for the lover of handbags to make a final decision on which one to buy.
This is really just a sampling of the diverse products at the Urban Flea. I didn’t even mention the leather designs, the handmade soaps, and the plethora of Indiana-themed products. You really should check it out for yourself.
