Spots and Stains: What’s the Difference?
In everyday conversation, we may use the words ‘spot’ and ‘stain’ interchangeably, but from the perspective of the professional carpet cleaner, these words actually describe two different things. Let me explain to you a little bit about how spots and stains are different and why you should care.
They are chemically different.
A spot and a stain reflect different processes that occur on a molecular level. Spots are caused when substances are spilled onto carpet or as the result of wear or contact. Particles of these substances become embedded in the carpet fibers, changing the look of the carpet. Spots are often composed of organic substances such as dirt, food, or animal excretions. Stains on the other hand are created when a substance actually changes the carpet fibers in some way. Some common substances which create these kinds of stains include bleach, other cleaning products, and certain medical creams (such as benzoyl peroxide).
Their treatment is different.
Once you understand that different processes are involved in the creation of these discolorations, you can easily see why each demands a different solution. As you have probably already figured out, spots are much easier to treat. Sometimes spots can be handled easily by a homeowner without the need for a professional. Because the fibers of the carpet are not altered by a spot, treatment simply involves removing the substance that is causing the discoloration. Even when spots do not respond to at-home spot removers, they can often be removed by a professional carpet cleaning. However, stains are not so easy to deal with. They permanently change the carpet fibers so this kind of discoloration must be reversed by another chemical change. This process should not be attempted by a novice homeowner, but rather should be left to trusted professionals who have the necessary expertise and experience.
Their presentation can be different.
One final difference that you should be aware of is the way these discolorations can make themselves known. Unlike a spot which you will see right away, a stain is not always initially visible. Yes, you read that correctly. A stain-causing agent may have already done its damage without your notice. Stains are caused by a chemical change which separates the dye from the fibers of the carpet, and this separation can occur slowly without necessarily disturbing the dye. Then at a later time, when the fibers are further agitated, the dye may be displaced, making the stain apparent.
