Special Measures for Wool Carpet

Nylon, wool, blend, olefin; how do you choose which one is right for your house? While there are many options, wool is ideal if you are looking for a durable, stain resistant and comfortable carpet.

Why Wool

Wool is resilient, comfortable, long-lasting and easy to take care of. It is also inherently fire-resistant and eco-friendly, so it is not only comfortable, but safe for you and your family.

  • Fire-resistant: Wool has high levels of nitrogen and water content that makes it naturally fire-resistant. Wool requires high levels of oxygen in the surrounding areas in order to burn and it generally does not hold a flame.
  • Eco-friendly: Wool, as we know, comes from sheep. The process of shearing a sheep is renewable and low-impact for mother earth. Wool carpet is also energy efficient; it does not require much energy for production (about 1/8 of the amount to produce nylon).

Some carpet types take unique care and maintenance to keep them looking good. Understanding your carpet is the first step in proper care so follow these guidelines when cleaning your wool carpet.

Caring for Wool

Wool carpet by design is great at keeping dirt and hair out of the carpet itself. Dirt tends to sit on top of the carpet, so frequent vacuuming is the best defense. Vacuuming often prevents this dust and dirt from embedding in your carpet. Be sure to lift area rugs and vacuum underneath to remove dirt and dust from the carpet.

Vacuuming will keep your carpet clean for the most part, but deep cleaning once a year will prolong the life of your carpet and keep dirt from settling. Professional cleaning is recommended for wool carpets because they can be difficult to dry. We recommend professionally cleaning carpets once every 1-2 years, depending on how dirty and high trafficked your carpets are.

As with any carpet, be aware of small spots and stains. Blot spots as soon as they happen to prevent deep stains. Bleach and ‘Oxy-‘cleaners are extremely hard on wool carpets and should be avoided when spot cleaning.

Wool carpets are great for rooms that see a lot of dirt and shoes. This carpet is resilient but does need some assistance from you. Avoid scrubbing or rubbing the area. Using too much force will distress the threads and create a fuzzy patch on your carpet. Simply blot and lift stains from your carpet.
