Common Household Substances for All-Natural Cleaning

iStock_000017228264_ExtraSmallIf you are interested in reducing your use of chemicals, you are not alone. Many of us are turning away from harsh compounds and turning toward a gentler and more natural approach to cleaning. Fortunately, there are lots of simple substances that make excellent natural household cleansers. These substances were probably used by your grandmother when she was cleaning her house, and you probably already have many of them in your own kitchen cabinets. Here is a list of a few to get you started.

Distilled White Vinegar. As a mild acid, vinegar can be used to attack soap scum, mineral deposits, or other dirty or waxy buildups. It also inhibits the growth of mold and leaves your metal surfaces and fixtures looking shiny. If you are deterred by the odor of vinegar, you can soften it by mixing in a few drops of your favorite essential oil.

Baking Soda. Chances are, you are already using baking soda to keep your refrigerator smelling nice and fresh. That’s because baking soda is a natural deodorizer. But its slightly abrasive character also makes it a helpful cleanser. Baking soda can be combined with a little water to make a thick paste, which works well for scouring and scrubbing on a variety of surfaces.

Salt. In addition to making your food taste good, salt has a number of household uses. It can be used to clean greasy pans or even break down greasy buildup in your drain. In the laundry room, it can remove certain stains, especially perspiration. This versatile substance can also be combined with other natural ingredients such as vinegar, lemon juice, and even vegetable oil to clean household surfaces from tile to porcelain to wood.

Lemon Juice. Another natural substance with cleansing properties is lemon juice. Try using lemon juice to bleach fabrics or to remove tough stains on countertops. It can also be used (either alone or combined with salt) to clean and brighten copper pans or fixtures. Most importantly, cleaning with lemon juice makes your whole house smell fantastic…and clean!

These common household materials will go a long way in helping you keep your house clean while limiting your use of chemicals. And when you need that extra deep cleaning for carpet, tile, furniture, or rugs, you can trust Langenwalter Carpet Cleaning to deliver the results you’re looking for.
