Carpet Protectant: Is It Necessary?

Last week’s blog detailed some enemies of your carpet.  This week’s introduces you to a friend – carpet protectant.  You may have heard of carpet protectant or even considered using it.   Or you may be unsure of what it is and whether it is worth it.  Keep reading to find out some important facts about carpet protectant and how you can best take advantage of its benefits.

What is Carpet Protectant?

Carpet protectant is a substance applied to carpets which repels water and resists ground-in soiling.  Utilizing a substance similar to that used on non-stick pans, carpet protectant will slow the absorption of spills and keep dirt from lodging deeply in carpet. It will not prevent all staining.  Rather it just gives you a little more time to clean up spills and vacuum up dirt.

Is It Worth It to Apply Carpet Protectant?

In a word, yes.  If you want to keep your carpet looking new, protectant is a highly effective tool.    However, if you are expecting miracles from your carpet protectant, you’ll be disappointed.  You cannot pour a mixture of red wine and black ink on your carpet and expect to just wipe it away.  There will be some substances (especially dyes) that will leave stains.  Carpet protectant will not perfectly preserve your carpet.  What it will do is allow you to minimize staining and slow down the gradual discoloration that results from soil build-up.

Should I Use Carpet Protectant on My New Carpet?

Your carpet will never look better than the day it is installed.  Not a mark, not a smudge, not a spot.  You can look out over your floor and think “It’s perfect!”  So you want to do all you can to protect that blemish-less beauty.  You may consider this an ideal time to treat your carpet with protectant.  Well, you would be right and wrong.  You’re right that carpet protectant can help preserve your new carpet. But you’re wrong to think that you need to take action.  It is unnecessary that you apply any protectant because new carpets now have it applied at the factory.  This protectant usually lasts several years but can gradually wear off and become less effective.
