Since pets and kids seem to be the number one cause of most stained carpet, it’s only fitting that people are always asking us if carpet cleaning is safe for pets and kids. Now, there are some sorts of carpet cleaning, especially older techniques, that did carry real risk. Cleaning residue was left behind, and as children or pets played on the floor, they could breathe it or absorb it into their skin, leading to some nasty side effects. But most carpet cleaners today use materials and techniques that are entirely safe. However, you may be instructed to keep your kids and critters off the carpet while it dries, but that’s to keep your carpet looking better rather than for their health or safety.

However, there are some spot treatment chemicals which can be dangerous for you and your pets. When looking at a potential spot cleaner, remember to avoid spot cleaners which include formaldehyde, butoxyethanol, hydroxyacetic acid, phenol, butane and sodium hydroxide. You can always treat spots with a solution of vinegar and water, which is entirely safe for everyone.

When you have pets or kids in the house, you’ll probably want to increase the frequency of your carpet cleaning to once every 6-12 months. All their busy little feet and dirty little paws can quickly discolor and dirty your carpet, but pollen, hair, viruses and bacteria can also build up, making your carpet not only unsightly, but unhealthy. If you have a family member who suffers from allergies, especially consider regular carpet cleaning to help relieve some of their worst symptoms in-season.
