4 Steps for Cleaning Your Dorm Room

You have handed in all of your final papers and presentations and you completed your last round of tests for the semester. Congrats, you made it out alive! Even though you are done cramming for tests and spending countless hours in the library, before you pack up your stuff for summer break, you need to clean up your dorm room. Here are some simple and easy tips to help you get your dorm room clean again.

1. Dust, Dust, Dust

It’s best to pack up most of your belongings before you start deep cleaning so you can get an accurate sense of which areas in your room need more TLC than others. Once all of your items have been boxed up, break out the duster and get to work. Dust all of the surfaces in your room, not missing inside the dresser or closet. If you didn’t do much cleaning throughout the school year (and let’s face, who does?) you’re going to have a lot of dust buildup in your dorm room. After you have dusted all of the surfaces in your room, it’s time to move on to step two.

2. Wipe Down Surfaces

Your dresser, desk and other surfaces need to be cleaned before you leave campus for summer break. Use an all purpose cleaner to wipe down these surfaces with a paper towel or rag. Make sure you really scrub off any tough, stuck on stains. Remember all of those times you left food on your desk, or something spilled on your dresser? Those stains have dried up and become a sticky mess. Make sure those stains are taken care of before you lock up your room.

3. Clean the Floor

Dorm rooms are notoriously small, but that doesn’t make them any easier to clean than your bedroom at home. The floor is the first thing people notice in a small space, so if your dorm room floor is filthy, it’s time to start cleaning. Sweep or vacuum the floor. Some dorms will provide residents with a vacuum cleaner to share, or if you have a small portable vacuum cleaner you can use that too. But cleaning the floor doesn’t stop at vacuuming. Vacuuming won’t get rid of any stains that might have occurred during the school year. You will need to use a mop to get those floors sparkling clean.
